DRIVERS will face delays until December at the Milton Interchange, near Didcot, where an £11m scheme is under way to convert the A34 junction into a hamburger roundabout.

Work started on January 12 but from next Monday, a full traffic management system will run 24 hours a day. The work is expected to last all year.

There will be a 30mph speed limit in the area for traffic travelling south and a 40mph limit for drivers heading north.

Abingdon taxi driver Colin Dobson regularly takes customers from Abingdon to Didcot.

He said: “I spent over 40 minutes the other day queuing for the interchange so I think the new phase of work will inevitably cause delays.

“These roundabouts work well when they are finished but delays could have a significant effect on local businesses.”

Oxfordshire County Council cabinet member for transport David Nimmo Smith said signs in the Winchester and Birmingham areas would alert drivers to the delays.

He added: “Local drivers will find alternative routes and there will be times when the traffic is more congested than others. There will be some pain for drivers but it will be easier once the work is completed.”
