DIDCOT’s Prince of Wales pub could be demolished to make way for a new hotel.

However, owner Greene King denies it has been approached by South Oxfordshire District Council, saying it had no plans to sell the “popular and thriving pub”.

The council’s new Didcot champion, Bill Service, maintains Greene King has been asked by the council about selling the Station Road pub to make way for the redevelopment of the Didcot Gateway site opposite the town’s railway station.

But the brewer was “holding the council to ransom” by asking for millions of pounds, double its market value, said Mr Service, who has taken over the role from late council leader Ann Ducker.

Mr Service, who is also cabinet member for leisure, said other priorities were paving the way for phase two of the Orchard shopping centre and making progress on SODC’s bid for a £22m leisure centre opposite the Ladygrove estate.

A Greene King spokesman said: “The Prince of Wales is a popular and thriving pub which is well used by the community and visitors alike.

“We have no plans to sell the pub and have not been approached by the council with an offer to buy it.”
