WORK to resurface one of the worst roads in Oxfordshire is finishing.

Figures from Oxfordshire County Council show that Station Road in Didcot is in the top five roads that are in the worst condition.

And workmen have been on site this week to repair it as part of a £90,000 scheme that lasted four days.

Eleanor Hards, leader of Didcot Town Council, said: “I think the surface has taken quite a battering during the work on the station forecourt so the work had to be done but it has been painful while it lasted.

“It has been chaos. I had a meeting in the Civic Hall and I walked. It took me half an hour which was quicker than if I had driven.”

Work on the road started on Wednesday and will be completed tomorrow.

It has been taking place in three phases but meant the road had to be closed and cars were diverted around the town’s perimeter road.

Last month the county council completed the £8m redesign of the station’s forecourt, which was aimed at improving parking and cycling facilities.

County councillor David Nimmo Smith, cabinet member for transport, said: “We have formally opened the forecourt and the area is being tidied up. This work has needed to be done.

“We have really smartened the whole area up.”
