Milton gun incident: police saw man shoot himself

THE man who shot himself with an air weapon at Milton Services near Didcot yesterday remains in hospital today, police have said.

It has also been confirmed today that the man, who has not been identified, shot himself after unarmed police officers had arrived at the scene.

Police spokesman Craig Evry said officers had been called to a report of shoplifting at the BP service station and saw the man, who is in his 40s and has not been named, with an air rifle.

He then shot himself.

Mr Evry said the man's injuries were not life-threatening.

Superintendent Rob Povey, the police commander for South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse, added: "This was an isolated incident and there was no risk to the wider public, although areas were cordoned off to allow police officers to deal with the incident.

"The man remains under hospital care and is in a stable condition."
