WALKING football sessions for older people are set to kick off in Bloxham, near Banbury, next week.

The sessions, which start on Tuesday are aimed at people over 50 who want to keep playing football but lack the fitness to compete in the traditional form of the game.

They have been organised by Cherwell District Council and the Oxfordshire Football Association and will be held at The Warriner School.

Walking football follows all the rules of regular football but is played at a slower pace, with players required to keep at least one foot on the ground at all times.

District council lead member for performance and communications Kieron Mallon said: “Walking football is still considered to be a relatively new sport but one that is rapidly gaining popularity. The sessions are a great way for people to continue their love of football but without the pressure to keep up the pace.

“By slowing things down and relaxing the pace people can still come together to show off their skills and flair but at a speed which is comfortable.”

The sessions will be held weekly from 5.30pm to 6.30pm and will cost £2.
