PARENTS of pupils at an Oxfordshire school have been rewarded for their extraordinary fundraising efforts.

The Friends of Dr South’s Primary School in Islip have raised more than £35,000 for their school in two years.

Now their achievements have been recognised with a £1,000 prize and trophy at a ceremony in London, organised by the National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations (NCPTA).

They were one of only eight schools to win an award, presented by the Minister of State for Schools, Nick Gibb MP.

Chairman of the Friends of Dr South, Megan Washington, 42, pictured with the trophy, said: “Back in 2008, we came up with a three-year strategy to raise funds for the school. In the first year alone we raised £19,000 and then we’ve managed £35,000 in total to date.”

This amounts to an equivalent of £351 per pupil. The money has already paid for a weekly specialist sports coach, playground and music equipment, a cooker and various pieces of equipment for classrooms.

Dr South’s headteacher Helen Barnard, pictured second from left, said the PTA was a “wonderful” group.

She added: “The commitment and energy of all parents is astounding and the school would not be the same without the resources enabled by the astonishing level of fundraising.”
