POLICE are warning residents in the Bicester area to keep their garden sheds locked.

They are urging residents to check security at their sheds and outbuildings at a time of year when they are more likely to be left open and unlocked.

They have issued a series of tips in a reminder to residents to step up security.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: “Please check your garden, shed and outbuilding security.

“At this time of year many of us are busy working in our gardens.

“While doing this it’s easy to forget that a few simple steps could reduce the risk of your home being burgled.”

Advice to residents includes ensuring that they lock their garden gates and that the locks can’t be easily accessed by reaching over the gates.

Residents are also being told to use good-quality locks on their sheds, outbuildings and garages, and consider fitting anti-tamper screws on the hinges.

Home owners are also being asked to consider using a shed alarm, which can be bought from most garden centres or DIY stores.

Tools, spades and ladders should be locked away, as these could be used to break into houses.

To report anything suspicious call police on 101.
