A BULLINGDON prisoner, jailed eight years ago for robbery, has extended his stay after he brought a blade fashioned out of a toothbrush to a prison hearing, later punching another prisoner.

David McKenzie has been a serving prisoner at HMP Bullingdon since 2009 for a single count of robbery.

The 40-year old appeared at Oxford Crown Court via videolink to be sentenced for the possession of a knife in prison and assault occasioning actual bodily harm yesterday.

The court heard how McKenzie had feared for his life out on the prison's wing as a result of a debt he was believed to owe and he had wanted to be kept in isolation at the segregation unit.

Feeling that court staff had ignored his pleas, the court heard, he brought the makeshift weapon he had found in his cell to an adjudication meeting on January 26.

The weapon was a toothbrush which had been melted and was supported by two razor blades.

He brought it to the meeting in order to convince staff he was dangerous and needed to be kept away from the wings, the court heard.

Later, on February 21 he went on to assault another prisoner by punching him, causing him to land badly and suffer an injury from his fall. He needed hospital treatment and suffered fractures.

For having the blade he was jailed for 10 months and for the assault three months to run consecutively.
