STAFF at a Turkish restaurant helped to save their workplace from going up in flames.

A fryer in the kitchen of Denis Restaurant in Bicester caught alight late yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the Sheep Street restaurant at 4.43pm after staff members partly extinguished the flames.

Crews from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue finished off the job and treated a man for smoke inhalation at the scene before paramedics stepped in.

Crew manager Doug Whitford from Bicester Fire Station said: “Due to the prompt action of the staff in calling the fire service, we were able to extinguish the fire and simultaneously assist a staff member suffering from the effect of smoke inhalation.

"The staff acted quickly using an extinguisher before leaving the property, but we would always advise everyone to ensure that your personal safety is the most important consideration.

"Fortunately the damage was contained to a small area enabling the business to continue operating”.
