A WOMAN prison guard was injured after a ‘puffed up’ inmate launched into a rage.

Roy Munday, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty at Oxford Crown Court on Friday to the assault occasioning actual bodily harm on prison officer Kim Newman at HMP Bullingdon on October 17.

The 49-year-old is serving a 54-month sentence in prison for robbery and has 45 convictions to his name, dating back to 1980.

Jonathan Stone, prosecuting, said: “At Bullingdon a prison officer heard shouting coming from one of the spurs.

“Newman was in charge at the time.

“She went to see what was going on.

“She thought it was showboating; showing off.

“She followed another prison officer and said she was going to challenge Munday’s behaviour.”

Munday was described as being ‘puffed up’ and after officers challenged him he launched into a rage, and began shouting and asking them to fight him.

There was a struggle and, before he was subdued, Munday twisted Newman’s thumb, injuring her.

Sentencing Munday, Judge Ian Pringle said: “However the incident came about its clear you are someone that all of the prison officers were attracted to and thought you were responsible for that shouting even though you deny it.

“What took place was clearly unseemly and it was totally unacceptable.

“You are approaching your 50th birthday and I hope that you can, partly for your young son, try and put everything behind you.”

Munday, who is not due for release until December 2018, was sentenced to six months in prison for the assault to run concurrently.
