YOUNGSTERS at a Bicester special school have been getting crafty and making jewellery.

As part of a school project custom-made jewellery has been made in all shapes and colours, with some youngsters even getting ahead for Mother's Day ideas.

This term has seen Thursday afternoons at the Bardwell school in Hendon Place transformed into a Jewellery masterclass for the 16 to 19-year-olds.

The students were given options at the start of the year for various sessions from which they chose jewellery making classes.

Thomas Langston, 17, said the classes were "really good fun" and Niamh Quayle, 17, added how much she liked the jewellery she had made.

The most recent project included making bright bracelets from household items such as plastic bottles.

Students have been cutting and sticking to create the colourful plastic jewellery and showed them off to each other.

Laurie Simmonds, 17, showed off some of the bright bangles he had made and was even thinking about using them as a gift for his mum.

He said: "It is fun and I can make my mum a bracelet."

Mother's day falls on Sunday, March 6, this year which may prove perfect timing for the keen youngster.

As part of the project the students are also looking into music, web design and fitness this term as part of their options.

This has included visits from staff at local cricket clubs to host PE sessions with the older students and then continue with activities throughout Mondays.

The school currently has just over 50 pupils and includes post 16 education for just over 10 students.

In the coming weeks the school will be celebrating - with around 100 people - the official opening of a new purpose-built post-16 centre called The Lodge.

A special guest has been booked for the grand opening which will be held on Friday, February 26.
