A WOMAN who nearly died after wrongly being prescribed swine flu drug Tamiflu is celebrating “good news all round” after a surprise marriage proposal and a promising outlook for her poorly son.

Samantha Goddard was left blind after the medical mistake and had to endure a tough 2015 as one-year-old son Vinnie went through brutal chemotherapy for brain tumours.

But after so much heartache, 2016 is set to be a year to remember after Christmas Day brought the surprise marriage proposal and news that Vinnie’s brain tumours are shrinking.

Miss Goddard is now looking forward to marrying her partner Tony Chandler – who is also visually impaired.

With the help of friends, the happy couple, of Windle Gardens, Bicester, are planning the special day for Saturday, July 23.

Miss Goddard said: “It is good news all round.”

Mr Chandler popped the question after settling Vinnie in bed at about 1am on Christmas Day.

“He was fiddling around then he came over and got down on one knee in front of the bed,” said Miss Goddard.

“He said ‘I would like to know if you would like to be Mrs Chandler?’”

Christmas Day was full of celebration for the pair as they gradually told family members their happy news.

Miss Goddard, 25, said: “It is a big surprise. I had no idea at all. I never saw myself getting married.”

The pair have been together since Vinnie was 17 days old and her husband-to-be treats her son as his own.

Vinnie was diagnosed with low grade glioma – which means he has two brain tumours – when he was just three-and-a-half months old.

The tumours are benign but a rare form that continue growing. Doctors say the condition is not genetic or a result of Miss Goddard’s health problems after being wrongly prescribed Tamiflu in December, 2009.

She later settled out of court with the National Pandemic Flu Service Helpline.

Vinnie, who is also now registered blind, is fed through a tube and has to undergo chemotherapy three times every six weeks until he is two years old.

His mum said: “It is great news about Vinnie as the tumours have shrunk to a size that you can hardly see them.

“He’s not got much chemotherapy left and will finish just before his second birthday in June so that’s just brilliant news.

“He is just a happy-go-lucky lad who is also teething at the moment. He is also sitting up and doing a lot more than what we thought. He can say words such as ‘mama’ and ‘dada’ and he loves Disney junior and Jeremy Kyle, funnily enough.”

Friends have come forward to pay for the photography, dresses, hair and make-up, the venue and the cake.

And one is arranging for a guide dog to carry the rings down the aisle.

Miss Goddard said: “We will be getting married at Garth Park. The theme is royal blue and white.

“It is all coming together.”
