FIREFIGHTERS freed a woman trapped inside a car that plunged down an embankment on the M40 near Bicester.

The fire service was called to the crash involving two cars and a lorry at junction nine at 6.25pm on Thursday.

Officers said two cars went down the embankment and one overturned. Crews worked with South Central Ambulance Service to rescue the woman who was treated at the scene.

Two fire engines from Bicester and the specialist rescue vehicle from Kidlington attended.

Thames Valley Police and the Highways Agency coned off part of the motorway slip road and directed traffic.

Crew manager Paul Mann said: “Fortunately nobody was seriously injured in this incident. One car was on its roof and had to be secured, to stop it moving, before we could rescue the lady.

“We worked closely with our colleagues from the police and the ambulance services to assist the people involved and to make the scene safe as quickly as possible.

“I would like to stress the importance of taking care while driving in dark and wet conditions as the winter approaches.”
