THOUSANDS of people grabbed their plates and gathered in Bicester for the town’s fourth Big Lunch celebrations.

About 5,000 people headed to the town centre for the annual event, which saw millions across the country come together to share lunch with their neighbours.

Balloons and bunting covered Sheep Street, which was lined with tables and chairs, while the new Bicester Food Festival took over Pioneer Square.

Bicester Big Lunch chairman Jason Slaymaker said his team had raised £10,000 since January for this year’s lunchtime festivities.

The 23-year-old said: “It was a really nice day. The weather was absolutely fantastic. It’s brought everyone together of all ages.”

Street theatre performers on roller-skates dazzled audiences, with Mickey Mouse, Darth Vader and Superman paying a visit to the town.

Musicians, including a Katy Perry tribute band, entertained guests, as well as dancers and stilt walkers.

Mr Slaymaker said he launched Bicester’s Big Lunch event in 2012 to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
