A retired teacher died after swallowing pills during a police raid on his home, an inquest heard yesterday.

Michael Lafford, 67, refused to allow police entry to his home in Market End Way, Bicester, when they came to arrest him on November 18, Oxfordshire Coroner’s Court was told.

After police forced their way in, Mr Lafford was found on a sofa “taking unidentified white tablets”, said Oxfordshire coroner Darren Salter. “He appeared confused,” he said. Mr Lafford was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, where he died later that day.

The preliminary hearing was told the cause of death was as yet uncertain.

A full inquest has been set for June 9.
