FORMER players and managers from Banbury United are invited to join the current generation for a look back at the club’s history this week.

The club will be holding a former players’ day on January 16 as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of its formation, after the demise of Banbury Spencer Football Club.

To coincide with the club’s home game against Larkhall Athletic, former players and managers can attend free of charge to get together and reminisce about their old playing days.

Committee member David Shadbolt said: “Former player days have been successful at other clubs and we are delighted with the response so far.

“A number of players from the 1970s through to more recent times are also coming. The list is growing daily, but we will be delighted to see more.

“Social media and word of mouth will play an important part in getting the word out there and making this day a success so anything you can do to help will be much appreciated by the club.”

Those who have confirmed they will be making an appearance include striker Colin Holder, who played between 1967 and 1969 and later managed the club in the early 1990s.

Centre-half Bob Haynes, who was a mainstay of the team’s back lines in the late 1960s and early 1970s, will also be in attendance.

They will be joined by the club’s record appearance holder Jody McKay, who made 647 appearances and scored 178 goals between 1991 and 2008.

The club will be holding a pre-match buffet at 2.15pm, and there will be a display of photos covering the club’s history including team photos.
