CHRISTMAS may be six weeks away but volunteers are already calling on people to show some festive spirit.

National initiative Operation Christmas Child is encouraging families, work colleagues and friends to group together and fill shoeboxes to be sent to help refugees fleeing Syria.

With just a week gone of this year’s appeal they are past the 500 mark.

Gifts can include school stationery, toys and winter clothing.

Moira Oliver, from Banbury, said: “We are relatively rich as a society so we can share the joy of the holiday.”

By paying the transport donation of £3 per shoebox online, donors will receive an email in the New Year with the shoebox’s destination.

They can be dropped off at the Entertainer in Castle Quay, Shoe Zone in High Street, Leeds Building Society in High Street, the People’s Church in Horsefair and at Bodicote Stores in Molyneux Drive, Bodicote, by November 18.
