A TALENTED wildlife photographer is celebrating after winning an award in a national competition.

Will Yeong, of Banbury, was commended in the native category in Marwell’s Wildlife’s Photographer of the Year competition.

His winning picture captured a puffin mid-flight and was taken on Skomer Island off the coast of Pembrokeshire.

Mr Yeong, who specialises in wildlife and landscape photography, said: “One aim I had from the start was to get an in-focus puffin with the sparkly Irish sea in the background.

“I took hundreds of pictures before I got the photo I wanted. I could happily spend all day outside just to get the perfect shot, but having said that I always love to make the most of any opportunity I get to a photo like this.”

He said his early inspiration for photography had come from taking pictures with his father on family holidays. The photograph will now be displayed at Marwell Zoo in Winchester for 12 months.

Laura Barwick, image consultant for BBC Natural History Unit and the competition’s head judge, said: “It’s an absolutely beautiful shot, caught in magical light perfectly backlighting the puffin’s wings in flight.”
