The M40 is shut northbound following a fatal crash between junction 11 and junction 12.

It is understood the crash happened half a mile prior to Gaydon and involved a lorry and a car.

Warwickshire Police Spokeswoman Abbie Hartley said the force received a call at 11.20am.

She added: “The collision was between a lorry and a van. The van driver had sadly died.

“The van passenger had sustained life changing injuries and they have been taken to hospital.

“Junction 11 has been closed by Thames Valley Police.

“A motorway disruption should be expected for the next four hours.”

An air ambulance has attended the scene.

South Central Ambulance Service Spokeswoman Michelle Archer said it was called to this morning to a road traffic collision on the M40.

She added: “We were on the scene assessing two patients, sadly one of the patients was deceased at the scene.

“The female patient was taken to Coventry and Warwick hospital by land ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

“We sent four ambulances and four ambulance officers.

“The Coventry and Warwickshire air ambulance was also sent.”

Traffic trapped in the incident has not been released and a diversion is in place via A422 Westbound onto B4100 Warwick Road Northbound to rejoin M40 J12 at Gaydon.

There are tailbacks of four miles as a result of the incident.
