Visitors get a rare glimpse of Cold War nuclear airbase

MORE than 100 people got a look behind the scenes of a former Cold War airbase as part of a nationwide English Heritage programme.

The organisation teamed up with Heyford Park owners the Dorchester Group to open the gates of the Upper Heyford site to almost 120 people.

Visitors were given a guided minibus tour of the base, including the quick reaction alert area, weapons storage area and battle command centre.

Chris Prescott, director of the Heyford Park Heritage Centre, said: “Heyford Park is an excellent example of British and American heritage.

“By encouraging people to visit, we want to make the most of the unique Cold War era architecture and military artefacts and educate local people about the place they live in and the important role it has had to play on the global stage.”
