Army major named as A34 crash victim

AN ARMY major from Bermuda, who volunteered at the Olympics, was killed in a car crash on the A34 by Abingdon.

Major Christian Wheddon, of the Bermuda Regiment, had trained at the defence academy in Shrivenham as part of a four-month visit to England.

The 43-year-old was recruited to help with security at the Games when private firm G4S did not recruit enough guards.

He died after the Mitsubishi Warrior he was a passenger in left the carriageway at about 12.40pm on Sunday.

In a statement released today his family said: “We are devastated.

“Words cannot express the shock and horror of Chris’ passing.

“He was the rock of the family and we will all feel lost without him.”

Maj Wheddon had been training in the UK since July to become the next commanding officer of the Bermuda Regiment.
