A finely tuned balancing act for opera punting pair

Mike and Vanessa Woodward Mike and Vanessa Woodward

MIKE and Vanessa Woodward have been performing opera in a punt in their bid to take music to the masses.

The couple, from Sunningwell, near Abingdon, formed the company Opera Anywhere in 2000 after making their debut in their home village.

Now they sing on punts on the River Thames and yesterday entertained diners at The Cherwell Boathouse restaurant in North Oxford.

Mr Woodward said: “We perform at Folly Bridge, at Port Meadow, and at the Henley Festival and it’s not easy to sing and punt at the same time so two people on the punt take it in turns.

“We always get a good reception from the diners at the Cherwell Boathouse – the acoustics on the river means sound carries for quite a long way.”

I'm only a blow in (here 15 years), but I would have thought that the picture shows the Cambridge position for punting?

Yes, think we have a Cambridge man here, he is at the wrong end of the punt, also wearing a Cambridge Blue dicky,
