FIREFIGHTERS will no longer be based at ‘Abingdon Fire Station’ after it changed its name this weekend.
A sign was unveiled on Saturday sporting the town’s new name of Abingdon-on-Thames. Firemen based at the station took the opportunity to throw the station’s doors open to the community.
Station manager Gary Mattingley said: “We have done it to reflect the new name of the town but also to bring the community together. The people of Abingdon have been really generous with their support.”
The town’s name change was suggested by Abingdon Town Council and approved by Vale of White Horse District Council in February.
The day featured a barbecue and book sale as well as giving people the chance to look around the station and have a go with the hose reel.
Fundraising took place for The Fire Fighter’s Charity, which supports serving and retired firemen and their families.
