ABINGDON Scouts have enjoyed an eventful 100 years.
They have travelled the world, raised a fortune for charity and been forced to rebuild their headquarters.
In 1976, two fires in 24-hours virtually destroyed the 30th Abingdon Group’s Scout hut. But, one year later, the group received thousands of pounds worth of donations and rebuilt their headquarters on the same site, near the Baptist Church in Ock Street.
All of Abingdon’s Scout groups have had problems finding leaders.
In 1969, it was reported Abingdon District Scout Council urgently needed leaders and instructors, and this was repeated throughout the 70s and 80s, with groups being forced to turn away new members.
In 1992 the crisis was so bad it threatened the future of Scouting across Oxfordshire, and in 1988 the 2nd Abingdon troop almost disbanded after a lack of leaders.
Many Scouts have travelled the world represented Abingdon’s Scout Groups at the World Scouting Jamboree, including visiting Canada in 1955 and South Korea in 1990.
