FAIR play to Nick Clegg. The Deputy Prime Minister was in Abingdon on Saturday and met 500 people at the Guildhall.
It was the scene of one of his party’s crushing blows at the General Election, when former Lib Dem MP Evan Harris lost the seat to Tory Nicola Blackwood.
Mr Clegg insisted it was not the start of the long road to help win the seat back for the Lib Dems, but a chance to banish Whitehall cabin fever. He was quizzed on a range of issues, some even the most devoted of parish councillors would have struggled to answer.
This time around the people of Abingdon gave Mr Clegg a warm welcome. But the reception could be very different in a year’s time when the cuts start to bite.
