IN the age of iPhones and X-Boxes, the traditional summer lemonade stand might feel like a symbol of a bygone era.

But these youngsters in Abingdon not only raked in nearly £100 with their delicious cake, cookies and refreshments – they are donating it all to charity.

The five friends from South Avenue spent days getting ready to run their stall on Friday.

Oxford Mail:

Ten-year-old Ellie-Kay Buckingham, who only moved to South Avenue in November, set her heart on setting up shop and roped in her neighbours Bailie Thomas, ten, Harry Merritt, nine, and sisters Aileen and Chloe Brosnan, 12 and seven, to help out.

Ellie-Kay's mum Laura said: "They decided they wanted to set up the stall and sell cakes and lemonade for a good cause.

"This was all by themselves – no parent intervention.

"Over a couple of days they hounded the whole street, putting up posters, knocking on doors and making people pinkie promise they would come and by a cake."

Oxford Mail:

Even on Friday morning the tireless entrepreneurs were still sticking reminders through people's doors.

In the end their diligence paid off.

In one afternoon the youngsters sold 30 brownies, 15 cookies and 30 cups of lemonade, and made a phenomenal £98.50 which they are donating to Cancer Research UK.

Demand was so high, in fact, that Ellie-Kay's mum had to make an emergency batch of Rice Krispie cakes.

She added: "We were just inundated with neighbours.

"Given we only moved here in November, it's great because I've meet all our neighbours I hadn't had a chance to meet yet."

The cakes and lemonade were so popular, the kids have now promised to return this Christmas with a hot chocolate and marshmallows stall.
