DRIVERS who can’t tell a big end from a piston can get to know their vehicles better in Abingdon next week.

Martin Gilbert Motor Repairs is running free basic car maintenance evening classes for both men and women so they can work on their own vehicles.

The course includes checking oil levels, light bulbs, water and windscreen wash levels, tyre pressures and windscreen wiper blades.

Staff had the idea after seeing research that people are choosing not to have their car serviced to save money.

Mirabelle Mack, from the repair shop, said: “Personally I enjoy having a basic knowledge of cars, and it makes trips to the garage a lot less daunting.

“I like the confidence it gives me, doing the various checks before a long journey.”

She added: “Friends have confessed their lack of confidence with their own cars and how they would like to know more.

“We would like to try and simplify your car for you, so you know your way around the basics and help to reduce the risk of major failures.

“Regular maintenance should also help reduce annual motoring costs by keeping your vehicle in its best condition.”

Qualified vehicle technicians will explain how often you should check your vehicle, and problems to keep an eye out for.

The family-run business is based on the Radley Road Industrial Estate. The first class will be on Tuesday, February 9, then once a month until May. Call 01235 553055.
