Kerry Reeves, who was shot in the head during an attack in Abingdon, has died.

Police confirmed the 26-year-old passed away on Thursday at about 11.45am, while also officially naming Miss Reeves as the victim.

A 20-year-old man from Ealing was arrested last night on suspicion of attempted murder and has now been rearrested on suspicion of murder following Miss Reeves' death.

He has been bailed until December 5.

The force is still hunting for a second suspected gunman, although it is refusing to say if they are male or female, in what is now a murder investigation.

Emergency services were called to the outside of a block of flats in Thornhill Walk at about 8.20pm on Tuesday [nov 3] after reports a woman had been shot in the head.

Miss Reeves was rushed to the John Radcliffe Hospital with "life-threatening" head injuries.

Thames Valley Police superintendent Jim Ryan said it was not a random attack and Miss Reeves knew her attackers.

It was believed Miss Reeves had been visiting a flat in the block when she was shot.

Neighbours in the narrow road, which has many homes owned by Sovereign Housing Association, said they heard a loud bang followed by a scream or a moan on the evening Miss Reeves was shot.

One resident said he was told she was shot in the face at close range in the communal gardens behind the line of terraced houses.

A 52-year-old man, from Longmead, who lives near the scene of the shooting, said: "I heard a group of men talking and then later I heard someone cry out."

The community has been left in shock following the attack on Miss Reeves, with many leaving floral tributes and messages of sympathy to her and her family.

Misael Valente, 56, lives with his wife Lucia Valente, 59, in Trendell Place, which leads to Thornhill Walk.

Mum-of-one Mrs Valente said: "I have a 24-year-old daughter myself – it’s so shocking to think that someone could be shot so close to where we live at 8 o’ clock in the evening."

Reverend Keith Dunnett, associate priest at Christ Church, said the church was offering its prayers to the 26-year-old and her family at this "horrendous" time.

He added: "People are deeply shocked around here, and deeply saddened by what has happened.

"As a church we have been praying for Kerry and her family and friends this morning. We will be praying for them on Sunday as part of our prayers for the town."

Investigating officer, Det Ch Insp Mike Lynch of Major Crime, said: “Our thoughts are with Kerry’s family at this very difficult time.

“Our investigation appears to indicate that this was not a random attack and the offenders knew Kerry. We are still actively searching for a further suspect. We would urge anyone with any information about this incident and who has not already contacted the police to call us on 101.”
