TO SEE a hedgehog in November is quite a rare thing, as most will have already begun hibernation for the winter.

As a result, wildlife photographer George Reszeter, who lives near Abingdon, was astonished to see one rustling around the leaves in his garden.

He said: “Something must have disturbed it and it was just looking around for food.”

When the Wootton resident returned to the hedgehog a couple of hours later, he was even more surprised.

Mr Reszeter added: “I noticed that the hedgehog was knawing on something but couldn’t get a good look from the window. So I decided to grab my camera and take a look. When I saw that the hedgehog was eating a baby rat, I was shocked.

“Usually it’s the other way round.”

The 60-year-old father-of-two believes this is the only snap of a hedgehog eating a rat in existence. He said: “I’ve done a Google search, looked on the wildlife websites, and can’t find a picture like it.”

The former Oxford Mail photographer, who took the photo on Thursday, added: “I’ve taken some strange pictures in my time, but this is up there.

“I’ve been all over Europe, but when you stop and you start looking at what’s around you, you’ll be surprised with what you find.’’
