A WOMAN was rescued from a flat in Banbury Court, Abingdon, after a fire broke out in the early hours of this morning.

The fire and rescue service were called at around 5.30am by a neighbour who could hear the smoke alarm going off.

Two fire engines were sent to the scene and crews were met by the neighbour who told them she thought the woman was still inside.

A slegehammer was used to get through the door and the woman was rescued by firefighters and then checked over by paramedics.

The cause of the fire was a result of cooking left unattended

Watch Manager Kevin Kerry said: "This fire highlights the importance of having working smoke alarms in your property, and shows the dangers of leaving cooking unattended."
