ABINGDON’S Abbey Grounds riverside area is being revamped with residents’ help.

The Abbey garden and meadow on the northern bank of the Thames currently has an outdoor swimming pool, crazy golf, tennis courts, and a children’s play area.

Vale of White Horse District Council wants to invest in the riverside site to attract more visitors and is working with national charity Hidden Britain to invite Abingdon residents to a workshop to discuss how the area could be improved.

Together they will put together three different plans for the site to be published in the spring.

Residents will then be asked to vote for their favourite.

Vale cabinet member for leisure Elaine Ware said: “Abbey Grounds is a wonderful area in which to spend time, however, we really want this great riverside location to fulfil its potential as a prime tourism, leisure and relaxation area.”

Council leader Matthew Barber said: “To develop the site we need to get to grips with what people want to see there and what’s feasible given certain constraints, including the flood plain, and financial and heritage considerations.”
