A BUSY dual carriageway was closed for several hours after a lorry shed its load of steel pipes just before midday today (Thursday).

The A66 through Middlesbrough was closed in both directions near the Riverside Stadium while the pipes were safely removed from the road.

Vehicles being diverted off the A66 were caught up in heavy traffic in the town centre throughout the afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 11.27am this morning.

The road was closed between the A172 Marton Road interchange and the Middlehaven interchange while recovery operations were carried out by police and firefighters.

It was reopened shortly before 4pm.

One of the pipes hit another HGV carrying antifreeze but this load remained contained in the vehicle.

No one was injured as a result of the incident.
