A GROUP which organises events and activities for residents aged over 55 has celebrated its 60th anniversary.

The Evergreen Club based in Long Hanborough, Witney, threw a party to mark the occasion with its 40 members.

It is understood the club was originally created along with a host of others throughout Oxfordshire to offer activities and social gatherings to the over 65s.

President Sara Ruane who has been a member for 18 years, said the majority of the club were in their 80s.

The longest-serving member is Grace Richmond, 95, who has been involved since 1985.

Mrs Ruane said: “It’s completely independent and completely run by its members who are volunteers.

“It’s a very social occasion getting together and it’s very important.

“Usually we have a speaker or another form of activity. It’s really good for the age group.

“The club has had really good support from the recreation hall. It has always been in that hall.”

The group celebrated with a special lunch and cake party on Tuesday.

It has had 16 presidents since it was first created in 1967 and activities are run by a committee.
