A WOMAN in Woodstock is gearing up to fly to Mexico for potentially life-changing MS treatment after more than 500 generous people donated to help make it happen.

Nina Cosgrove, 38, appealed in the Oxford Mail last weekend to raise £35,000 towards an experimental treatment that could stop her being paralysed by multiple sclerosis.

Readers and supporters donated a staggering £23,975 between them which, added to extra cash raised by the family, has been enough to secure her appointment in Monterrey for treatment at the end of April.

She said: “It’s just amazing. I am so pleased and happy to see the response.

“I’m still keeping the fundraising going as we have another £10,000 to go to cover all of the costs; I will need to do a lot of physiotherapy to get my strength back up and hopefully I will be able to improve my walking.”

Mrs Cosgrove, who works for a science publisher, and her mother will fly out on April 22 for her to undergo a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) with a course of chemotherapy, which ‘reboots’ the immune system and can halt the progression of MS.

The treatment is still being trialled by the NHS and only a small number of people in the UK fit the criteria to take part.

Mrs Cosgrove said: “We are excited. It’s all quite overwhelming but I’m so pleased; I’m following the progress of people currently in Mexico saying how wonderful the treatment is.

"Thank you to all the readers of the Oxford Mail who donated and shared my story."
