We might be in the middle of a EU referendum campaign, but it seems David Cameron would rather go for a quiet one down the pub.

The Prime Minister turned down an offer to meet MP Peter Bone in Witney during an anti-EU campaign, and gave his own seal of approval to one of the local pubs.

Appearing on Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday evening, Mr Cameron rejected the offer to meet the Wellingborough MP on Sunday as he said he will be on BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show that day.

The Witney MP said: “I’m very sorry I won’t be able to meet my honourable friend. I would recommend he go to the Fleece pub in Witney and spend as much time and as much money there rather than anything else.”

The name drop was music to the ears of The Fleece's general manager Duncan Froomes, who said: "We were thrilled to hear David Cameron recommending The Fleece to Peter Bone and the rest of Parliament.

"It's not very often our wonderful Witney gets the recognition it deserves. Even better when he recommends us for food and drink.

"I was especially proud to hear David Cameron telling Peter Bone to spend as much time and as much money with us as he could.  On this subject, we couldn't agree more.

"For the rest, we will leave the House of Commons to their debating while we get on with the important business of serving up the good stuff.  Come on in and see this house whenever you like."

MPs Mr Bone and Tom Pursglove will be outside The Fleece in Church Green, from noon on Sunday.
