POUNDING the pavement to get potholes fixed, one councillor ran more than 6km around Witney East counting 50 problem points in the road as he went.

Duncan Enright laced up his trainers before setting off with his camera phone to take pictures of all the potholes he could find.

He even met up with global campaigner Mark Morrell from Brackley – better known as Mr Pothole – to raise awareness of the "dangerous" condition the town's streets are in.

Mr Enright, a member of West Oxfordshire District Council, said: "These potholes are dangerous and I don't want anyone to end up in hospital – it's time to do something about them.

"I've taken photos of every pothole, broken pavement and kerb stone to highlight the shocking mess our roads have become.

"Instead of complaining I went running to log the most unsafe examples, get them fixed, and alert the councils and our MP David Cameron to the serious nature of the problem, which costs people money and makes our roads unsafe."

Each pothole recorded on the sponsored run has been forwarded to problem-solving website fixmystreet.co.uk using the mobile phone app to alert Oxfordshire County Council of the repairs needed.

FixMyStreet can be downloaded for free on to anyone's phone, so if residents spot a broken street lamp, abandoned car or pothole, they can take a picture and send the information straight to the council.

Mr Enright added: "Of course it is crazy that you have to do sponsored runs to get potholes fixed, when our taxes have already covered this.

"We raised enough to get some potholes fixed, and reported some urgent and dangerous work on Newland straight away."

He said the worst examples were in Manor Road, Wood Green, New Bridge Street, Cogges Hill, Newland and Oxford Hill.
