Police are hunting for a masked-knife man who approached a nine-year-old girl and asked for her money while she was travelling home from school.

The incident sparked a warning to parents to be vigilant and to advise their children to report any suspicious behaviour.

Thames Valley Police said at about 3.30pm yesterday, a man went up to the schoolgirl while she was riding her scooter along a cycle path near Hollis Close.

The man asked her if she had any money and when the girl said no, he ran off towards Cogges Hill Road.

Police said the masked man was 5ft 7ins and slim.

They added he was wearing a black hooded top, black jogging bottoms, black gloves and a mask over his face showing his mouth and eyes. He was also carrying a small knife.

Det Sgt Rob Hughes, said: “I want to reassure people that this is an isolated incident and we have had no other similar incidents reported to us in Witney. It is important that people remain calm but vigilant.

“We are continuing our enquires and appeal for any witnesses, or anyone with information about the incident, to come forward.

“If you see any suspicious activity please report it immediately. We will be providing reassurance patrols in the area over the next couple of days."

Headteacher of The Blake School, Tim Edwards-Grundy praised the actions of the girl and said she did the right thing to report it.

He added: "The child did the right thing by going home and telling mum.

"The school is following all of its usual safety procedures. We have informed all the other schools in the area.

"We do not want to scare parents or children. We just want them to be aware that if they follow some simple advice that they will be safe."

Parents of pupils at Henry Box School in Witney were warned to be vigilant by an email sent from headteacher's PA Eileen Bourton.

Ms Bourton wrote: “We have been alerted to an incident outside The Blake School today. A man wearing a balaclava and carrying a small knife approached a child asking for money.

“The police are involved. Please advise your child to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to school immediately.”

Father-of-two Chris Mitty, who sends his two daughters to the schools said he was shocked by the incident.

The 40-year-old Operations Manager for property agent Breckon and Breckon added: “It’s worrying that children are being approached in broad daylight.

“I hope the police will ensure this person is brought to justice quickly. I am impressed by the school’s quick response to warn parents.”
