PART of a road in the centre of Witney will be ripped up and replaced next month after transport bosses said the job done by a contractor was not good enough.

Oxfordshire County Council said Skanska would begin the two-day work on Corn Street on July 23.

The road is to be dug up between 7.30am and 2pm, with some access still possible.

Afterwards there will be no access between Holloway Road and Marlborough Lane until 6pm, the council said.

Access for residents and businesses will be available from 6pm until 9am the next day.

On July 24 the council said the resurfacing would be carried out from east of Holloway Road to Butchers Court, finishing at 6pm.

The work will not cost the council extra cash.

A spokesman for the county council said: “Due to a problem with the quality, the contractor has agreed to replace this entire section at his own cost.”

During the work there would be no parking allowed on Corn Street, the spokesman added.

Skanska construction manager Declan Moss said: “We aim to provide the highest quality of work and to ensure that Corn Street meets these standards we need to undertake some remedial work. We apologise for any inconvenience.”
