A TEENAGER was sexually assaulted in Witney on Tuesday afternoon, police said today.

At about 2pm the girl was outside Smarts Takeaway fish and chip shop in Market Square with a friend, when a man walked past and touched her, sexually assaulting her.

The attack was reported earlier this week, but police did not inform the public about it until today.

Staff at the shop said they were questioned by police on Wednesday and did not see anything.

Police said the offender is in his fifties, about 5ft 8ins, of slim build with short grey hair. He was wearing a grey jacket and carrying a grey rucksack.

PC Matthew Glen said: “I am keen to speak to anyone that was around the area on Tuesday and witnessed the assault.

“Reports of this nature are taken seriously and anyone with any information that could assist with the police investigation is encouraged to speak to an officer.”

He added that there has been increased police activity in the area after the attack: “We are making enquiries and patrolling the area to offer reassurance to local residents and if anyone has any concerns they should speak with officers who can help to address these.”

Police spokeswoman Francine Rodrigues  said the attack was reported by a member of the public and that there is no CCTV footage available of the attack.

She added the offender was a stranger to the victim, and his identity is unknown.
