PARENTS have called for a new pedestrian crossing for their children to walk to school safely.

The parents of children at Wantage CofE School took the petition to Wantage Town Council.

They asked if it would be possible to create crossings at the bottom of Chain Hill and in front of the school in Manor Road.

The council asked highways authority Oxfordshire County Council if there would be any money available from housing developer contributions for the works, but was told there was not.

Now the town council is waiting to find out if there is any other funding available for the work.

Mayor Fiona Roper said she would like the crossings to be created.

She said: “I think it is quite a good idea, particularly the one of Chain Hill.

“There is a lollipop lady at the school at entry and exit times so I would have thought it would be more of a priority on Chain Hill.”

Councillors were told by their clerk on Monday night there was no developer funding available for the work.
