EVERY November poppies are everywhere from wreaths on war memorials to suit button holes as the nation remembers those who gave their lives in the service of their country.

At Marston Court Care home, Marston Road, residents have been making poppies with a difference as they got out their needles and knitted them to support the Poppy Appeal.

Activity coordinator Penny Jenner said: “I saw an article in a magazine about knitting poppies and decided to start doing it here.

“I adapted the knitting pattern to make it easy to follow because some of our residents are quite elderly.

“I thought at first we would not have enough to do a wreath but suddenly I was inundated with them so we made three wreaths and we also had some which people could wear.

“We are giving the wreaths to the Royal British Legion on Thursday and we are selling the safety pin ones to raise money for the appeal.”

One of the contributors to the project was Barbara Jarman.

She said: “It’s been an opportunity for us to celebrate at a time when maybe the next generation may not know what poppies are about.

“It’s another reminder of what our predecessors have done for this country. I’ve always celebrated Armistice Day and supported the Royal British Legion.’’
