A CELEBRATORY supper is to take place in Bicester to mark its fifth year as a Fairtrade town.

Fairtrade Bicester members will gather at St Edburg’s Church, in Church Street, on October 21, for a two-course meal with coffee – all of which will be Fairtrade products.

Fairtrade promotes better trading conditions for producers of coffee beans, bananas, nuts and tea in developing countries.

At the event there will also be music, videos, a quiz and a Fairtrade stall, Fairtrade Bicester said, and the public is invited to attend.

Chairman Colin Cockshaw said the group was in the process of renewing Bicester’s Fairtrade credentials for the next two years with the Fairtrade Foundation.

He said: “Becoming recognized as a Fairtrade Town was just the first step and with the arrival of Sainsbury’s in the town there is growing use of Fairtrade.

“But there is work to be done to encourage greater awareness of the importance of Fairtrade in ensuring that farmers in the developing world get a fair price for their work and for their crops.”

Those wishing to attend the supper can buy tickets for £2.50, the group said.

The event will also coincide with the 20th anniversary of the introduction of the Fairtrade mark in the UK.
