Banbury United edged further away from the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division relegation zone with a superb 2-1 victory at Bideford on Saturday.

Goals from Marvin Martin and Wayne Blossom made it a comfortable day, with Bideford’s goal coming in stoppage time.

The hosts should have taken an early lead as Sean Downing shot wide.

Blossom and Ryan Plowright went close for Banbury, before they went ahead in the 33rd minute.

A long throw from Albi Skendi was helped on at the near post to Martin, who struck the ball low into the corner of the net.

Martin had an excellent chance to make it 2-0, but could not beat Bideford keeper Tim Sandercombe.

The Puritans doubled their lead in the 55th minute.

Ryan Plowright put Adeyinka Talabi clear, and although Sandercombe got there first, the ball rebounded to Blossom, who lofted it into the unguarded net from 25 yards.

With new new signing – ex-West Ham United academy player Kenzer Lee – combining well with George Allen at the centre of defence, Banbury kept Bideford at bay.

The hosts eventually netted in the fifth minute of injury time through Matt Andrew.
