A BUS driver whose wife battled breast cancer hit the streets to run his usual route to an Oxford hospital for charity.

David Kemmett, of Greater Leys, usually drives the number 10 bus for Stagecoach to the John Radcliffe Hospital but decided to do the journey on foot to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The charity supported his wife Christine as she battled with breast cancer last year, with Mr Kemmett catching the number 10 to visit her while she was receiving treatment.

He said: "It was devastating for us when Christine was diagnosed and it was a really hard year.

"I wanted to do something to show my appreciation to everyone who helped her while she was fighting cancer."

The 44-year-old ran the 13.7 mile-route, which starts in Horspath Road then goes via Templars Square Shopping Centre, The Plain, High Street, St Aldate's, Wood Farm and Windmill Road, on September 16.

It marked a year since Mrs Kemmett, 47, had her third and final operation, after being diagnosed in May 2015.

Mr Kemmett added: "She was in hospital all that week, including on her birthday, and the bus I had to get on to see her was the number 10, which I also drive.

"After everything, it makes me think about how lucky we are to have got through it and how lucky I am to be with such an amazing woman."

So far Mr Kemmett has raised more than £900 for Macmillan, but is still hoping for more donations.

The charity helps to improve the lives of people affected by cancer, by providing practical, medical, emotional and financial support.

This can include providing grants for costs such as travel expenses and hospital parking, with some 50 Macmillan healthcare professionals also able to help people manage their symptoms and make living with cancer easier.

An average of nine people every day are diagnosed with cancer in Oxfordshire.

Mr Kemmett added: "The number 10 route will always be poignant for me.

"I always wonder if any of my passengers getting off at John Radcliffe are going through what we have.

"I hope the money raised will make people aware of the great things Macmillan do and help fund care for other people battling the terrible disease."

Stagecoach Oxfordshire managing director Martin Sutton said: "What David has achieved is remarkable and we are extremely proud of him.

"David and his family have shown such admirable strength throughout their battle.

"Here’s to a happy and healthy future for them all."
