TWO builders have admitted carrying out substandard work on a pensioner’s home.

Abingdon duo Christopher Meacey, of Stonehill Walk, and Angel Jay, of Cotman Close, were tasked to complete interior renovation to the Radley park home, but ripped off the pensioner, according to Oxfordshire County Council.

The home owner, who does not wish to be named, first employed Meacey, 48, to paint the house, move a wall and install a new toilet, bath and bathroom cabinet in April 2013.

Meacey charged £4,810 for the work which, according to trading standards, was “significantly higher than the work’s worth”.

Seeing that the standard of workmanship was poor, the pensioner contacted 41-year-old Angel Jay to take over the work.

At Oxford Crown Court on January 23, Meacey pleaded guilty to breaching the third regulation of the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, meaning work done was not professionally diligent and was either poorly executed, below standard or done without the correct skill, knowledge, expertise and qualifications.

He also admitted breaking the fifth regulation – charging an inflated amount for work.

Jay appeared at Oxford Crown Court on January 26 and admitted breaching the third regulation of the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.

The case was brought by Oxfordshire County Council’s Trading Standards Team after the victim brought it to their attention.

Trading Standards Team Leader Anu Prashar said: “Unfortunately there are some traders out there who take on jobs, do poor quality work and then vastly over inflate the price.”

The pair will be sentenced at Oxford Crown Court on February 27.
