A CHARITY has taken over the management of a small nature reserve in Abingdon.

Abbey Fishponds, near Thrupp Lake, is a seven hectare wetland that has been leased by Vale of White Horse District Council to environmental charity Earth Trust.

Previous manager of 20 years Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust decided not to apply to renew their lease this year.

Earth Trust will employ a site warden to maintain the pond and ensure everything that is needed for a thriving wildlife in on site at all times.

They will also use the space for community events and projects, with a particular emphasis on educating and encouraging children to learn about the local environment.

Lorretta Waters, neighbourhood wildlife warden for the trust, said: "We’re very pleased to add Abbey Fishponds to our portfolio of community wildlife sites.

"This tiny reserve is completely enclosed by housing and yet all sorts of species call it home.

"It’s a fantastic space for both local wildlife and the local community."

Historically, the site was grazed as farmlands but nowadays the reserve contains a variety of wetland habitats such as fen and reed beds, providing a home for water voles, badgers, kingfishers, reed bunting and smooth newts.

A family fun session will be held at the fishpond on Tuesday, February 17 from 2pm to 4.30pm ahead of an official launch event in April.
