A FATHER-to-be attacked his pregnant girlfriend with a knife and metal pipe in a jealous rage because he thought she was having an affair, a court heard.

A row erupted one morning between Amjad Mohammed and his partner Joanne Craft at their flat in Nursery Close, Botley, in August last year.

A jury of seven men and five women at Oxford Crown Court heard yesterday 35-year-old Mohammed flew into a jealous rage and accused Miss Craft of cheating on him.

Prosecutor Patrick Dennis said Mohammed began hitting Miss Craft – who was 22-weeks pregnant with the couple’s baby – then twisted her hair and told her to admit she was being unfaithful.

He added: “The defendant then picked up a metal pole which had wires sticking out of it. It was part of a lamp.

“The defendant then hit Miss Craft a number of times with this pole on her left arm and leg.”

The court heard that Miss Craft only escaped the onslaught when she told Mohammed her belly hurt and fled to the toilet.

But Mr Dennis told the jury that she had to return to the bedroom of their home because she had no phone to call for help and no window through which she could escape.

He said that when she returned Mohammed attacked her again with the pole but then picked up a kitchen knife.

Mr Dennis added: “He began waving the knife around, still talking about Miss Craft having to admit she had cheated on him.

“She tried to grab the knife from him, causing a slice to her hand.

“He brought the knife over her right hand, causing what was a deep and nasty wound.”

The court heard Miss Craft wrapped the heavily bleeding wound and managed to persuade Mohammed to call an ambulance for her.

Mr Dennis said Mohammed and Miss Croft told paramedics she had cut herself while chopping food.

But Mr Dennis told the jury that instead of directing emergency services to their flat, he sent them to another address in the same street.

He added: “Eventually the police managed to locate the right flat, Miss Craft went to hospital where her injuries were treated.

“She told the police and ambulance what really happened.”

Mohammed was arrested and denied wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He told officers Miss Craft had been the one who got jealous and accused him of having an affair before grabbing a knife from the kitchen and threatening to harm herself.

Mohammed said he picked up the metal pole and tried to knock the knife out of her hand but instead of hitting the knife he struck her, causing the injuries to her arm, while she caused the rest herself.

The trial continues.
