A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after a 19-year-old woman was killed in a crash on the A40 this morning.

The crash took place at 12.35am near the Agrivert plant between Eynsham roundabout and Wolvercote roundabout.

Officers said the woman, named locally as Katy Pancott, was getting out of a vehicle, a black C63 Mercedes, when she was then hit by a Ford Focus.

The woman died at the scene and her next of kin have been informed.

The driver of the Mercedes has now been arrested.

The A40 was shut for about eight hours while police investigated the scene, but reopened at about 8am.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek other routes while queues subside.

Police would like to speak to anyone who has any information about the collision, or who saw the girl or the Ford Focus prior to the collision, or the black C63 Mercedes.

Caitlin Marriott, manager at M&S at the petrol station on the Wolvercote roundabout, said: "The road was already closed when we arrived at 6am.

"I came from a different direction but some of the staff had to do huge detour. We just saw the police and assumed there was a crash.

"We haven't been told much information. When one of our guys was doing the forecourt checks, that's when found out the road would open again at 8am."

Det Insp Steve Raffield said: “We are currently dealing with a fatal collision in which a young girl has tragically lost her life this morning.

“There is likely to be significant disruption to motorists this morning as the A40 is due to remain closed for at least another two hours while investigators examine the scene of the collision.

"I appreciate this is going to be inconvenient for many people, especially during rush hour, and I would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding.

“If anyone has any information about the collision, please contact police as soon as possible via the101 number or via Crimestoppers.”
