THERE was plenty on the menu for Oxford United yesterday as some of the players cooked up a treat in the kitchen.

Fresh from the unveiling of their new kit, defender Joe Skarz, midfielder Josh Ruffels, and striker Patrick Hoban were judged for their culinary skills by MasterChef semi-finalist Sarah McCready and head coach Michael Appleton.

As part of a new corporate hospitality suite at the Kassam Stadium the players were showing off their skills.

Patrick Hoban’s menu, which consisted of an artichoke and green bean salad, chicken wrapped in bacon with potato fondant and a trio of American desserts, was judged to be the winner.

The 24-year-old said: “All the lads did really well and hopefully it is a taste of good things to come next season.”

It came as players and supporters praised the new home kit marking the 30th anniversary of the club’s Milk Cup triumph as “the fan’s choice”.

United will wear the two-toned yellow shirt with retro V-neck for the first time today as they visit Eastleigh.

The kit, a modern version of the one worn by Maurice Evans’s men in their 3-0 win over QPR at Wembley, has been well received by fans who hope it will boost the club’s promotion chances.

Joe Nicholls, 35, from Abingdon, a member of supporters’ group The Yellow Army, said: “They have listened to the fans, it’s a classy kit.”

Fans should be able to get their hands on the kit in time for the team’s Sky Bet League Two opener at home to Crawley Town on August 8.

The home kit will cost £39.99 for adults and £34.99 for junior sizes and the new away kit will be launched on Friday.

An Oxford Mail website poll yesterday of more than 550 votes found that 75 per cent of fans “loved the design.”
