PUPILS at Headington School were among those celebrating as they received their International Baccalaureate results yesterday.

The school had 24 girls who sat exams for the qualification this year, up from 17 last year.

Pupils’ average grade at the independent school in Headington Road was 38.5 out of a possible maximum grade of 45 and well above the world average of 30.

The International Baccalaureate is the equivalent of five A-Levels but students study six subjects, with an emphasis on global current affairs.

Headington School pupil Alex Emsley got a top score of 45 and will now go to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, to study veterinary medicine.

The 18-year-old said: “It went very well for me, I am really pleased.

“My main subjects were biology, chemistry and history and I also did French, English and maths.

Fellow pupil Millie Bond, 18, was awarded a score of 42 and will go to the University of York to study chemistry.

She said: “I did much better than I expected. It was a big result and a big surprise.

“The exams were stressful but I would say you get through with a lot of help from friends.”

Headmistress Caroline Jordan said she was delighted with the results.

She said: “The girls have done really well. We have been getting excellent results every year and it is a fantastic contribution to our centenary year.

“This is our fifth year of International Baccalaureate results.”
